KP-Lab

Project summary

KP-Lab is an ambitious project that focuses on developing a learning system aimed at facilitating innovative practices of sharing, creating and working with knowledge in education and workplaces. KP-Lab presents a unifying view of human cognition. It is based on the assumption that learning is not just individual knowledge acquisition or social interaction, but shared efforts of transforming ideas and social practices.

The objective of the KP-Lab project is to develop theories, tools, and practical models to elicit deliberate advancement and the creation of knowledge, as well as the corresponding transformation of knowledge practices in education and workplaces. The essential way of developing the collaborative technologies is through a co-evolutionary process involving researchers, technological developers and users.

KP-Lab entails design experiments and longitudinal studies in educational institutions and professional organisations. The development work builds on emerging technologies, such as semantic web, real-time multimedia communication, ubiquitous access using wireless devices, and inter-organisational computing. The development will be done mostly on an open source basis.

This Integrated Project, sponsored by the European "Sixth Framework Programme”, will run for 5 years. The first three years (2007-2009) will be the R&D phase, while the last two last years will be devoted, mainly, to dissemination activities and exploitation planning. Indeed, the partners are committed to make the project and it’s progress widely known as well as ensuring that its outcomes will reach a significant academic and commercial appeal to warrant a sustainable economic and research future.

The multinational consortium integrates expertise from various domains, including pedagogy, psychology and engineering as well as end-users and key representative from the corporate/business sector to provide authentic environments for research and piloting. The project involves 22 partners from 14 countries, as well as many schools, universities, companies and work places and other prospective end-users. Some of these are not partners of the consortium but will participate in the experimental phases of the project.
